CIS Server accounts

Required Accounts

  • CIS 89A

    All CIS 89A students are REQUIRED to set up a server account which you will use to put up your web pages on the voyager Internet server.

  • CIS 40 that meets on-campus

    CIS 40 students that meet on-campus are required to have a server account for use in classroom activites. You need a server account to use in the CIS class rooms and the CIS laboratory in the Advanced Technology Center.

  • CIS 22A and CIS 41A that meet on-campus

    You need a server account to use in the CIS class rooms and the CIS laboratory in the Advanced Technology Center.

  • CIS 22A, CIS 40, and CIS 41A that meet in Zoom

    You may get a server account if you wish. You can use your server account to access the voyager Internet server. If they are available, you can use your server account to use in the CIS class rooms and the CIS laboratory in the Advanced Technology Center

Accounts and servers

You can use the PC machines in the classroom and in the CIS lab in the CIS classrooms. They all connect to the same servers.

Do NOT attempt to set up your accounts before the quarter starts. Accounts set up too soon may have problems.
If you add the course, wait a few minutes; it will take less than an hour for the system to be ready for you to set up your account.

There are two servers:
puma, the windows server
voyager, the linux server

The set-up process will give you a pair of accounts, one on each of these servers.

You only need one pair of accounts. If you are taking two CIS courses, you only need to set up your accounts once.

Setup your accounts

In a CIS classroom or the CIS lab, you can set up your accounts at the beginning of the term (not later).
Use alt-ctrl-delete to access the login screen
Type:   hello   as the user name, and do not type anything for the password.
Use a web browser and access web page: http://www.deanza.edu/cis/
Scroll down if necessary and select the maroon button:   Create Your Business/CS Computer Lab Account IMPORTANT: Do NOT use your student ID for your CIS account ID or password. Keep your student ID private - the CIS IDs are public.
It will ask you for your information and will set up your accounts.

You get two accounts; one on puma and one on voyager. Both of your accounts have the same ID and the same password.

Be sure to remember your account ID and password.

After you set up your account, wait a couple of minites and try logging in to your new account.

Setup your accounts from home

You only need to set up your accounts once. You no NOT need to set them up at school and from home.

To set up your accounts from somewhere other than in the CIS labratory or CIS classrooms, use a web browser and access web page: http://www.deanza.edu/cis/
Scroll down if necessary and select the maroon button:   Create Your Business/CS Computer Lab Account
IMPORTANT: Do NOT use your student ID for your CIS account ID. Keep your student ID private - the CIS IDs are public.
It will ask you for your information and set up your accounts.

Working from home

You have limited access to files on puma account from home. If you wish to use files from your puma account, you can send then to yourself via email or carry them home in a USB drive.

After you have set up your voyager account, you can use your voyager account from home.

Windows users you can use your voyager account in the CIS lab at school using the link to the left, and selecting Voyager: Instructions for Home You do NOT need to set up the account again, just use it. You do need to set up putty if you are working from a PC.

Mac users In the following, replace yourUserID with the userId you created on voyager.
Under Utilities select Terminal.
At the prompt enter: ssh yourUserID@voyager.deanza.edu
The system then asks for the password. Type your own password. The password does NOT show up on the screen while you type it.
Logout when you are finished by typing exit and Enter.
